Rosalyn Hinson Obituary

Rosalyn Theresa Hinson, 77, passed away Monday, May 11, 2026.

There are some people whose presence changes the atmosphere of every room they enter. People whose love is so steady, so patient, and so selfless that it becomes the foundation upon which generations stand. Rosalyn T. Hinson was one of those people.

Rosalyn was the embodiment of grace, strength, sacrifice, and unconditional love. She was the kind of woman who made everyone feel seen, heard, welcomed, and cared for. To know her was to know warmth. To love her was to experience safety. And to be loved by her was one of life’s greatest blessings.

Born on April 30, 1949, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Rosalyn entered the world as the beloved daughter of Elsie Moore and Arthur Major. From an early age, she possessed a quiet strength and nurturing spirit that would define the rest of her life. She graduated from Olney High School in 1967, carrying with her determination, intelligence, and dreams for the future.

In 1969, Rosalyn married James D. Sewell, and from that union came the three greatest joys of her life: Hillary Shaw, Tariq Sewell, and Heather Sewell. Motherhood was not simply something Rosalyn did; it was who she was. She gave each of her children exactly the love they needed. She understood them individually, supported them intentionally, and loved them unconditionally.

When her marriage ended in 1978, Rosalyn faced the future with courage and resolve. Rather than allowing hardship to define her, she chose growth. She returned to school to further her education and earned her associate’s degree from Temple University, demonstrating to her children that perseverance and determination could overcome even life’s most difficult seasons.

Throughout the years, Rosalyn worked tirelessly to provide for her family. She served as a dedicated Social Worker for the City of Philadelphia, caring for others with the same compassion she showed at home. She often worked multiple jobs to ensure her children never lacked love, support, or opportunity. Yet somehow, despite the long hours and responsibilities she carried, she never missed a beat.

If her children were involved, Rosalyn was there.

She was in the stands at track meets. She sat proudly at chorus concerts and school plays. She cheered at football games and celebrated every awards ceremony and milestone. Her presence was unwavering. Her children never had to wonder whether she would show up. She always did. And she did it all with humility, strength, and love.

In November 1989, Rosalyn made a bold and courageous decision that would change the course of her family’s life forever. She packed up everything she knew and moved her family to Atlanta, Georgia, in pursuit of greater opportunity and a brighter future for her children. It was the kind of fearless act only a mother fueled by love could make.

In Atlanta, Rosalyn continued her career in customer service, working diligently at MCI, BellSouth, the Georgia Student Finance Commission, and eventually retiring from Home Depot. No matter where she worked, she left a lasting impression through her kindness, patience, professionalism, and genuine care for people.

But beyond her professional accomplishments, Rosalyn will perhaps be remembered most for the love she poured into others through her home, her kitchen, and her heart.

She was an extraordinary cook and baker whose meals became legendary among family and friends. Her cakes, pies, cookies, and homemade dishes were more than food. They were expressions of love. Holidays at Rosalyn’s home were filled with warmth, laughter, comfort, and the unmistakable aroma of something delicious coming from the kitchen.

Her home became a refuge for many.

Friends of her children knew they could always stop by for a homemade cookie, a slice of pie, a warm meal, or loving advice. Co-workers who had nowhere to go during the holidays found family around Rosalyn’s table. She mothered not only the children she gave birth to, but countless others who simply needed comfort, guidance, acceptance, or love. She kept your secrets, reserved all judgment, and welcomed people exactly as they were.

Rosalyn had a remarkable gift for making people feel safe.

Yet behind her gentle spirit was the heart of a survivor.

Rosalyn was resilient beyond measure. She faced life’s challenges with quiet courage and unwavering faith, refusing to let adversity define her. She was a proud two-time breast cancer survivor whose strength inspired everyone around her. Even in difficult seasons, she continued to love deeply, give generously, and care for others before herself.

Then, in 2004, during a Mother’s Day Brunch, life surprised Rosalyn with another beautiful chapter. There she met her prince charming, Robert Hinson, who danced his way directly into her heart. Their love story was one filled with joy, companionship, laughter, and devotion. Two years later, they married and built a beautiful life together grounded in love and partnership until Robert’s passing in 2023.

Together they shared a bond that brought happiness, peace, and renewed love into Rosalyn’s life.

Though her passing leaves an immeasurable void, Rosalyn’s legacy lives on in every life she touched. It lives in the values she instilled, the meals she prepared, the sacrifices she made, the hugs she gave, the wisdom she shared, and the unconditional love she extended so freely to others.

Her life reminds us that motherhood is not measured merely by biology, but by sacrifice, presence, compassion, and unwavering love. Rosalyn mastered all of it beautifully.

Remaining to cherish Rosalyn’s precious memory are her children, Hillary (Bryan Shaw), Tariq (Kimberly Sewell), and Heather Sewell; stepsons, Martin Hinson, DeJon Hinson, and Jeff Hinson (Natasha Hinson); grandchildren, Kayla Duncan, Michael Shaw, Bryan Shaw, Tariq Sewell, Jr., Naya Hinson, Gabrielle Hinson, Laurin Hinson, Trevor Sewell, Xavier Harris, Gavin Harris, and Jeffrey Hinson, Jr.; brothers, Robert Daniels and Gregory Snipes; sisters, Tonette Moore and Rasheeda Porter; along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.

While our hearts mourn the loss of her physical presence, we find comfort in knowing that a love like Rosalyn’s never truly leaves us. It lives on in the lessons she taught, the memories she created, and the countless lives she nurtured along the way.

The legacy of a mother’s love is eternal.

And Rosalyn T. Hinson loved magnificently.
