Velma McCaskey, a devoted daughter, sister, nurse, and friend, was born on September 14, 1928, in Birmingham, Alabama. She peacefully passed away on August 23, 2025, at the age of 97.
Velma was a proud graduate of A.H. Parker High School in Birmingham, Alabama, Class of 1946. She went on to earn her nursing credentials from Columbus Regional Nursing School in Columbus, Georgia, and later pursued her passion for faith and service by studying Theology at Youngstown State University.
Velma dedicated her professional life to caring for others. She was employed at St. Elizabeth Hospital (now Mercy Health) in Youngstown, Ohio, where she rose through the ranks to become Head Nurse before retiring in 1990. Her leadership and compassion left a lasting impact on colleagues, patients, and the community.
Raised in the Methodist tradition, Velma was an active member of Nicholas Temple AME Church in Birmingham and later joined St. Andrews AME Church in Youngstown. She served her spiritual community generously, often sharing her culinary talents and healthcare expertise.
In 2020, Velma moved to Lithonia, Georgia, to live with her beloved sister, Shirley Snyder. Known for her vibrant and multifaceted life, Velma was a lover of the arts, literature, and music—particularly jazz, classical, and gospel. She had a deep appreciation for health and wellness, cultivated a thriving garden of herbs and vegetables, and shared her knowledge and skills with family and friends.
A gifted seamstress, Velma created countless garments for herself and others. She introduced younger generations to practical skills and hobbies, fostering creativity and independence in those she loved. Her commitment to family extended beyond teaching—Velma used her medical expertise to provide care for her loved ones, including her father, whom she cared for until his passing in 1987. She faced life with strength and resilience, even survived contracting COVID-19 in 2020.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents, Frankie Smith McCaskey and James McCaskey, as well as siblings Gwendolyn McCaskey Gilbert, O’Greta McCaskey Gaines, Gloria McCaskey Tompkins, Shirley McCaskey Snyder, Marva McCaskey Swanson, Joyce Ann McCaskey, and Alvin McCaskey.
She also leaves behind to cherish her memory a host of nieces and nephews, including Sabrina Snyder, her devoted primary caretaker, and Andre Snyder, who faithfully assisted in her care. The family also extends heartfelt gratitude to Atrail Cullors, Velma’s dedicated Home Health Professional for three years, and to Autumn View Hospice for their compassionate care in her final months.
Velma’s life was a testament to service, love, and faith. Her kindness, wisdom, and legacy of care will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
